Robert Spring,a 19th-century forger, was so good at his profession that he was able to make his living for 15 years by selling false signatures of famous Americans.Spring was born in England in 1813 and arrived in Philadelphia in 1858 to open a bookstore. At first he succeeded in selling his small but real collection of early US autographs(亲笔签名).

Discovering his ability at copying handwriting,he began imitating(模仿)signatures of George Washington and Ben Franklin and writing them on the title pages of old books. To lessen the chance of being discovered,he sent his forgeries to England and Canada for sale and circulation.

Forgers have a hard time selling their products.A forger can't come near a respectable buyer but must deal with people who don't have much knowledge in the field.Forgers have many ways to make their work look real. For example, they buy old books to use the aged paper of the title page, and they can treat paper and ink with chemicals.

In Spring's time, right after the Civil War,Britain was still fond of the Southern states,so Spring invented a respectable maiden lady known as Miss Fanny Jackson, the only daughter of General“Stonewall”Jackson. For several years Miss Fanny's money problems forced her to sell a great number of letters and manuscripts belonging to her famous father.Spring had to work very hard to satisfy the demand. All this activity did not prevent Spring from dying in poverty(贫穷),leaving sharp-eyed experts the difficult task of separating his forgeries from the originals(原作).

26.Why did Spring sell his false autographs in England and Canada?

A.Because there was a greater demand there than in America.

B.Because there was less chance of being discovered there.

  C.Because Britain was Spring's birthplace.

D.Because the prices were higher in England and Canada.

In the 1800s,the steam locom otive(机车)was considered by many to be a symbol of the new industrial age.It was, indeed, one of the most important inventions of the time.Over the years, there have been many changes on the locomotive. One of the most important has been its source(来源)of power.During its history, the locomotive has gone from steam to electric to diesel(柴油机)power.

The first railroads used horses for power. The development of the steam locomotive made railroads a practical means of transportation. The first steam locomotive was built in 1804 in Great Britain by Richard Trevithick. It could carry 50,000 pounds, but it was not very successful because it was too heavy. However,it encouraged other engineers to try to build steam locomotives. Two of the most important men to pick up the challenge(挑战)were George Stephenson and his son,Robert.Robert once won a contest to build the best locomotive.“The Rocket”,as he called it,had a top speed of 29 miles per hour.

In America, the developments were close behind those of the British. In 1830,Peter Cooper's tiny locomotive, called“Tom Thumb”,lost a famous race against a horse-drawn coach. But it still made railroad officials feel certain that steam power was more practical than horse power.

Just before the turn of the century, the electric locomotive came into wide use.At its peak in the 1940s,US railroads had 2400 miles of electric routes.

The diesel locomotive was invented in the 1890s by Rudolf Diesel,a German engineer. The power of this locomotive was supplied by an oil-burning diesel engine. The diesel locomotive is still used today. It costs about twice as much as a steam locomotive to build, but it is much cheaper to operate.

45.The main idea of the passage is that over the years, there have been many changes in _____ .

46.Who built the first steam locomotive in 1804?

Endangered Species:Pandas and Tigers

Pandas are one of the rarest(稀有的)animals in the world. They live only in a small area in the mountains of Southwestern China.

(71)Now in the world, there are only 500-1,000 pandas surviving in the wild, and the number is decreasing all the time. There are about 100 more in zoos and research centres.

Although they are protected, pandas are still killed for their skins.Because they are so rare, their skins are very valuable.

(72)Pandas live in forests, and can eat only bamboo. As their home area is getting smaller and smaller, pandas are in danger of dying from lack of suitable food.

Zoos are making efforts to breed(繁殖)pandas in captivity(圈养),but this is very difficult. Also, baby pandas weigh only 100 grams at birth,so they need to be looked after very carefully.(73)Since 1963 about 50 baby pandas have been born in captivity, and around half of them are still alive today.

There are six species of tigers still in existence. They are found in Siberia,India and Southeast Asia.

Fifty years ago, tigers were common throughout much of Asia, living in many different places from tropical forests to semi-deserts.

(74)Because people thought they were dangerous, they were hunted and trapped, and tiger skins were considered very valuable.

By 1970,there were fewer than 5,000 tigers left, and many of their living places had been destroyed.

In 1972,Operation Tiger was launched:tigers were protected by law and reserves were created to protect the species.

(75)Gradually,numbers began to increase, and there are now some 8,000 tigers living in the wild.
