I have a friend who lives by a three-word philosophy: Seize the moment, Just possibly, she may be the wisest woman on this planet. Too many people put off something that brings them joy just because they haven’t thought about it. Don’t have it on their schedule, didn’t know it was coming or are too strict to depart from their routine.
I can’t count the times I called my sister and said, “How about going to lunch in half an hour?” She would gasp and stammer(结结巴巴地说), “I can’t . I have clothes on the line. My hair is dirty. I wish I had known yesterday. I had a late breakfast. It looks like rain.” And my personal favorite response: “It’s just Monday.” She died a few years ago. We never did have lunch together. From then on, I’ve tried to be a little more flexible.
Life has a way of going faster as we get older. The days get shorter, and the list of promises made to ourselves gets longer. One morning, we are awaken, and all having to show for our lives is repetition of “I’m going to”, “I plan on” and “someday, when things are settled down a bit.”
When anyone calls my “seize the moment” friend, she is open to adventure and available for trips. She keeps an open mind on new ideas. Her enthusiasm for life is contagious. You talk with her for a while, and you’re ready to change your attitude to life.
My lips have not touched ice cream in 10 years. I love ice cream. The other day, I stopped the car and bought a triple-decker. If my car had hit an iceberg on the way home, I would have died happy.
Now … go on and have a nice day. Do something you WANT to … not something on your SHOULD DO list.

D. it indicates the time when they can have lunch together.

We find that bright children are seldom held back by mixed-ability teaching. On the contrary, both their knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming(按能力分班)pupils. It does not consider the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have bad effects on both the bright and the not-so-bright children. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be the bottom of the top grade.
Besides, it is rather unreal to grade(分等级) people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We care much about the development of all the pupils’ abilities to the full, not just their study ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching does good to all these aspects of learning.
In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the chance to learn to work together, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to deal with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.
Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual(个人的)tasks, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is proper. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this well. An advanced pupil can do advanced work and it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to achieve this goal.
45. By “held back” in the first paragraph, the writer means “__________”.
A.made to remain in the same class B.forced to study in the lower class
C.drawn away from their studies D.prevented from advancing
46.The writer argues that what a teacher really cares about should be the development of the student’s _________.
A.personal qualities B.total personality
C.learning ability D.intellectual ability
47.We can infer from the passage that the writer’s attitude toward mixed-ability teaching is________.
A.strongly supportive B. unclear
C.Uninterested D. critical
48.What is the passage mainly about?
A. How to develop students’ total personality.
B.Mixed ability teaching does good only to bright children.
C.Individual tasks are the most important in learning.
D.How to teach children.

Do you sometimes argue about what seems to you to be a simple fact? Do you argue whether it’s cold outdoors or whether the car in front of you is going faster than the speed limit?
If you get into such arguments, try to think about the story about the six blind
men and the elephant. The first blind man who felt the elephant’s trunk said it was
like a snake. The second who felt the elephant’s side said it was like a wall, while
the third said it was like a spear as he touched the animal’s tusk. The fourth, who
took hold of the elephant’s tail insisted that it was like a rope The fifth man said
it looked like a tree as he put his arms around one of the elephant’s legs. The
sixth, who was tall and got hold of the elephant’s ears, said it was like a huge fan.
Each man’s idea of the animal came from his own experience. So if someone
disagrees with you about a “simple fact”, it’s often because his experience in the
matter is different from yours.
To see how hard it is for even one person to make up his mind about a “simple
fact”, try this simple experiment. Get three large bowls. Put ice water in one. Put hot water in the second. Put lukewarm(温水) water in the third. Now put you left hand in the hot water. Put your right hand in the lukewarm water. Your right hand will
tell you the water is cold. Your left hand will tell you it’s hot.
53. What makes people think about simple facts differently?
A The fact that simple facts differ from one another
B The fact that people have different experience in the same simple fact
C The fact that people often disagree with one another.
D The fact that it’s hard to make up one’s mind about simple facts
54. The writer’s advice is that
A we should never think about simple facts
B we should never judge something with a one-sided view
C we should not agree about simple
D we must learn from the six blind men
55. After reading the last paragraph, we may think of
A Newton’s law B Galileo’s theory of falling objects
C Einstein’s theory of relativity D Marx’s on capital
56. What’s the main idea of this passage?
A People often judge something according to their own experience
B People often agree about simple facts
C It’s hard for a person to make up his mind about a simple fact
D Don’t care too much about simple facts

China is going green. In order to reduce air pollution and oil shortages, carmakers have announced their plans to develop hybrid (混合燃料 ) vehicles for the Chinese market.
The first China made Toyota’s hybrid car Prius hit the road last week. Let’s have a look at the new car.
Any vehicle is a hybrid when it combines two or more sources of power. Hybrid cars use an electric motor with rechargeable batteries and a gasoline engine.
A hybrid car has a smaller than traditional gasoline engine and an electric motor. The gasoline engine provides 99% of the power when the car is cruising (匀速行车).
The electric motor provides extra power for running up hills or when extra acceleration(加速度)is needed.
Step into a Prius, and turn on the power. The first thing you notice is that it is quieter than a traditional car. At this point, the car’s gasoline engine is dormant. The electric motor will provide power until the car reaches about 24 km/h. If you stay at low speed, you are effectively driving an electric car, with no gasoline being used, and no exhaust gas given off.
An on board computer decides when to use the gasoline engine, when to go electric, and when t use a combination of the two. If you go over 24 km/h, when you step on the gas pedal(油门), you are telling the computer how fast you want to go.
The electric motor recharges automatically when braking. And when driving at certain speeds, the gasoline engine not only powers the car but also recharges the batteries.
When you use the brake, the electric motor acts like a generator to produce electricity to recharge the batteries. Batteries will last for around 200,000 miles.
57.When the hybrid car is cruising,______
A .there is no need to provide power
B. only the electric motor provides power
C.only the gasoline engine provides power
D. both the gasoline engine and the electric motor provide power
