Dear Alice,

You really have two different questions here, so we’ll discuss them one at a time. Your problems at school may be a result of a number of things. You don’t say much about how these classmates get along with each other. It’s possible that all the students are feeling a little cautious (谨慎的) in the first term.

It’s also possible that the others are unkind. If this is so, you have to find out why you are the class “outsider.”

In your letter you say you often offer to help others with their work. Is it possible that your classmates don’t understand your offers? Could it seem that you were trying to “buy” friends with these offers?

Is it possible that you took no notice of your classmates when you had your good friend near you? They may have felt hurt at that time. It may take a time for them to believe in you .If so, try to ask one classmate directly what the problem is. If you hear a negative (负面的) answer, at least you’ll know what to do.

Yours truly,

Shelia

The story is about two people named David and Rosy Jackson. Both of them had very bad memory. For example, Rosy would forget to cook dinner, or David would go to work on Sunday, thinking it was Monday. One winter they were to take a long plane trip. When they arrived at the airport, there was ten minutes left. In that situation (情况) anyone would get into the plane right away. But Mr and Mrs Jackson didn't do so. They went to buy the travel insurance first. After they put a two-pound note into a machine, their insurance policy(单据) came out.

"Who would get the money if the plane crashed, I wonder?" asked Rosy. "My mother, of course," her husband answered. "We'll post the policy to her. Now be quick, give me a stamp, will you?" he said, "the plane is going to take off in a minute." David put the stamp on the envelope, dropped it into a postbox. And suddenly he let out a cry. What do you think happened to him? He had posted their plane tickets to his mother.

65. According to the passage, what does the "insurance" mean in Chinese?

We sometimes say the lion is “the king of the jungle(丛林)”, because it is stronger and more dangerous than the other animals. It can run faster than most other animals and it can hunt the best. The lion is the highest animal in the land food chain(链,链条). In the sea, the shark is at the top of the food chain. It can swim faster than most other sea animals. It can also use its big teeth to catch other sea animals and eat them.

What is at the top of the world’s food chain? People are! We are not the biggest or fastest, but we are the cleverest. We could not run faster than most animals, so we invented cars and now we can move the fastest. We could not fight better than a lion, so we invented guns. Now we can hunt the best.

People’s inventions are clever, but they can be dangerous, too. For example, many years ago in Inner Mongolia, people used guns to kill a lot of wild wolves. The wild wolves usually eat wild rabbits. But in recent(近来的) years, the number of wild rabbits is becoming bigger and bigger because the number of wild wolves is getting smaller and smaller. The wild rabbits competed (竞争) for the grass with the sheep and cows. Much of the grassland became desert because it was seriously destroyed by the rabbits.

Remember that we are a part of the food chain, so we are in danger, too! If we protect animals, we are protecting ourselves.

68. Why are people at the top of the world’s food chain?

A. Because they can use guns.              B. Because they are the biggest.

C. Because they are the cleverest.           D. Because they can drive cars.

69. In what way do we say people’s inventions can be sometimes dangerous?

A. They can kill a lot of wild wolves.

B. They can destroy the food chain.

C. They can destroy the grassland.

D. They can make wild rabbits grow bigger and bigger.

70. What is the best title (标题) of the passage?

A. People’s inventions                         B. Lions and sharks

C. Food chain                               D. Desert
