Good afternoon, and welcome to England. We hope that your visit here will be a pleasant one. Today, I would like to draw your attention to a few of our laws.
The first one is about drinking. Now, you may not buy alcohol in this country if you are under 18 years of age, nor may your friends buy it for you.
Secondly, noise. Enjoy yourselves by all means, but please don’t make unnecessary noise, particular at night. We ask you to respect other people who may wish to be quiet.
Thirdly, crossing the road. Be careful. The traffic moves on the left side of the road in this country. Use pedestrian crossings(人行横道) and do not take any chances when crossing the road.
My next point is about litter (throwing away waste material in a public place). It is an offence(违法行为) to drop litter in the street. When you have something to throw away, please put it in your pocket and take it home, or put it in a litter bin.
Finally, as regards smoking, it is against the law to buy cigarettes or tobacco(烟草) if you are under 16 years of age.
I’d like to finish by saying that if you require any sort of help or assistance, you should contact your local police station, who will be pleased to help you. Now, are there any questions?

The main difference between Chinese and western eating habits is that unlike the West, where everyone has their own plate of food, in China the dishes are placed on the table and everybody shares. If you are being treated by a Chinese host, be prepared for a ton of food. Chinese are very proud of their culture of cuisine(烹饪) and will do their best to show their hospitality(客气).And sometimes the Chinese hosts use their chopsticks to put food in your bowl or plate. This is a sign of politeness. The proper thing to do would be to eat the whatever-it-is or you can just say a polite thank you and leave the food there.
Don’t stick your chopsticks upright in the rice bowl. Instead lay them on your dish. The reason for this is that when somebody dies, the shrine(祭奠) to them contains a bowl of sand or rice with two sticks of incense (祭奠时焚烧的香) stuck upright in it. So if you stick your chopsticks in the rice bowl, it is equal to wishing death upon a person at the table!
Make sure the spout(茶壶嘴) of the teapot is not facing anyone. It is impolite to set the teapot down where the spout is facing towards somebody. The spot should always be directed to where nobody is sitting, usually just outward from the table.
Don’t tap on your bowl with your chopsticks. Beggars tap on their bowls, so this is not polite. Also, when the food is coming too slow in a restaurant, people will tap their bowls, if you are in someone’s home, it is like insulting(侮辱) the cook!

A. Western people have their own plate of food at a dinner.
B. If the host put the food in the guests’ bowls, the western people will feel uncomfortable.
C. At a dinner in Chinese culture, you can stick your chopsticks in the rice bowl.
D. Tapping on the bowls are impolite in China.
