Having farmed in Florida for the past 35 years, Ed Rawling is prepared for the frosts . When temperatures drop below freezing, Ed tries to save his crop by watering his orange trees. The water freezes and forms a thin layer of ice on the trees. Strange as it may sound , this thin layer of ice actually keeps the fruit warm.
What happens is simple. When the trees are watered, the water loses heat and becomes ice. The warmth of the heat it loses is sucked in (吸收) by the fruit and keeps its temperature at a safe level. But Ed still faces some difficulties. The trees should be watered at the exact moment the temperature drops to the freezing point. Also, just the right quantity of water must be used. Too much water can form a thick layer of ice that will break the tree’s branches . Another difficulty is that wind blows away the heat. So Ed has to worry about not only when but also how often his trees should be watered , and how much water should be used .
Computer technology may help Ed Rawling with some of these worries. With equipment , air and soil temperatures and wind speed can be measured. The information is fed into a computer which can tell when temperatures drop to freezing. The computer can correctly decide the quantity of water to be used and how frequently the trees should be watered. Ed Rowling will find looking after his orange trees a lot easier with the help of a computer.

III. 阅读理解 :
Modern agricultural methods are very different from those used in traditional farming. Old techniques have been improved by the use of new technology to increase the amount of crops produced each year. This means that a lot of work that would traditionally have been done by a man or a powerful animal, such as an ox or a horse, is now carried out by machines. For example, in the past an ox would have been used to plough a field, but this is now done by a tractor. Similarly irrigation now uses an electric pump, and chemicals are used to fertilize soil rather than animal waste.
However, techniques such as the use of chemical fertilizers often have a bad effect on the local environment. Chemical fertilizers can end up in rivers and lakes, where they will kill fish and other animals. Also many people are worried that chemicals used to protect plants from pests such as insects may be harmful to humans.
Farmers using modern technology will want more space to grow crops, but this often means cutting down forests in the area for destroying the hedges that separate their fields, called hedgerow (灌木篱墙). However, this usually leads to soil being washed away by the rain and the ground being unsuitable for growing crops. It can also lead to animals dying out as their homes are destroyed, which is happening in the UK, where 25% of the hedgerow has been destroyed in the last fifty years, meaning that animals such as mice and birds have nowhere to live or to shelter from animals that want to eat them, like foxes or cats.
1.What's the main result of modern technology benefiting agriculture?
A. Less work by men or animals but higher efficiency and more crops.
B. Wide use of chemicals in fertilizing soil and killing pests.
