Tourism wasn't as important as it is today. In the past, only people with a good deal of money could travel on holidays to other countries. More people travel today than in the past because there is a growing middle class in many parts of the world; that is to say, people now have more money for travel. Special plane fares(费用) for tourists make travel less expensive and more attractive than ever before. One person doesn't travel for the same reason as another. But most people enjoy seeing countries that are different from their own. They also like to meet new people and to taste new food.
Tourism causes many changes in a country and in people's lives. People build new hotels and restaurants and train native men and women as guides to show visitors around interesting places. There're new nightclubs and other amusements. International tourism is clearly a big business.

Did you know that a turtle(海龟)can lay 12 eggs in one minute? A large sea turtle lays
around 150 eggs at a time. She lays all these eggs in just a few minutes.
Large sea turtles live in the warm seas of the world. Except when they lay their eggs, they
spend their whole lives in the water. When it is time to lay their eggs, the females swim to land.
They usually return to the place where they themselves were born. How they find their way back
there is unknown.
When they reach shore, the big, heavy turtles crawl slowly up to the high water mark. Using
their flippers(爪), they pull themselves along the sand. They must struggle like mountain climbers.
When they finally reach dry sand, they rest before beginning the difficult task of laying eggs.
The turtles lay the eggs in deep holes and cover them with warm sand. The sand protects the
eggs from harm. Then the females leave them. After a few weeks, if you happened to be walking
along the beach, you might see the sand begin to shake. You may see tiny(very small) black balls coming out of the sand. The tiny heads of baby turtles!

Once a New Zealand teacher asked where I live. “In the white building,” I answered.
“At our university both girls and boys live in the same dormitory.”I added.
Beyond my expectation(出乎意料), however, my attempt(努力)to show I am speaking American English(AE) turned out to be something else. The New Zealander seemed very puzzled(迷惑)at my answer.
With a half smile, she asked, “Really?Do they live in the same room?”
“Oh, no. They live in different rooms but in the same building.” I reacted(反应)quickly.
Later I got to know the word “dormitory”. In AE it means one building, whereas(而,却)it means one room in British English(BE).
The New Zealander misunderstood me because she spoke New Zealander English(NE), which, as we know, is much related to BE.
Nowadays, not a few English learners, who try to catch up with the fashion(时髦), choose to speak AE. Yet, the problem is that they cannot speak pure(纯的) AE, but half AE and half BE instead.  I think it necessary to keep one style in order to avoid(避免)misunderstanding.

54、The writer wrote the passage in order to     .
 A. tell us a funny story
B. warn us not to make mistakes
 C. tell us the differences between AE and BE
 D. encourage us to speak one style of English
55. Why did the New Zealander misunderstand the writer?   Because _______.
A. she didn't know what the writer was saying .
B. the writer didn't speak English
C. the writer spoke AE ,while the New Zealander spoke BE, and the word “dormitory” has different meanings in both AE and BE .
D. the passage doesn't tell us.

How often one hears children wishing they were grown-ups and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.
Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. What's more, life is always presenting new things to the child — things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known. But a child has his parents. He is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is continually being told not to do things or being punished for what he has done wrong.
When the young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.
56. According to the second paragraph, the writer thinks that __.
    A. life for a child is comparatively easy
    B. a child is always loved whatever he does
    C. if much is given to a child, he must do something in return
    D. only children are interested in life
57. After a child grows up, he __.
    A. will have little time playing
    B. has to be successful in finding a job
    C. can still ask for help in time of trouble
    D. should be able to take care of himself
58. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
    A. People are always satisfied with each part of their life.
    B. Life is less interesting for old people.
    C. Children are free to do what they want to do.
D. Adults(成年人) should no longer rely on(依赖)others.
59. The underlined word responsibilities in the second paragraph means__________.
    A. duties      B. jobs       C. suggestions     D. desires
60. The main idea of the passage is _________ .
    A. life is not enjoyable since each age has some pains
    B. young men can have the greatest happiness if they work hard
C. childhood is the most enjoyable time in one's life
D. one is the happiest if he can make good use of each age in his life

第二节:阅读下列材料,从所给的六个选项(A、B、C、D、E和F)中,选出符合各小题要求的最佳选项。选项中有一项是多余选项。
The people below are all looking for a university in Britain to further their studies. After the description(描述)of these people, there is information about six British universities A-F. Decide which university would be most suitable for the person mentioned in questions 61-65 and then mark the correct letter (A-F) on your answer sheet. There is one extra paragraph about one university which you do not need to use.
61 . Bob would like to study in a university which is strong in science subjects. He is especially interested in mathematics and hopes to become a teacher of mathematics in a high school after he graduates from the university.
62.  Alice wants to find a university where there are many student activities organized (组织)by students themselves, and students treat each other like family members. She also hopes that the living cost there is low.
63.  Mathew hopes to study in a university which pays particular(特别) attention to the training of students for particular work. He wants to live on campus to find more time for his studies. During the weekends, however, he hopes he can enjoy the exciting and important events that take place in the city.
64.  Victoria does not like the busy city life, and she wants to find a university outside the city. She hopes to make friends with students from different parts of the world.
65.  Simon would like to study in a university in London. Besides theoretical(理论的) work, he hopes to get some practical experience from some of the course teachers. He does not care much about the social life of the university.
A. The university is in Leeds and is well-known for preparing students for the world of work. Many courses are work-related and students learn by doing things. It is not difficult to find accommodation (住处) in the university .Many students live on campus(校园). The campus is very beautiful with a lake near the students' dormitory(宿舍). Students in the university say that Leeds offers the most fun outside of London. The city has lots of bars, theatres and cinemas – all ,right on the university's doorstep.
B. Students come to this university for the quality of teaching it offers. People in the university, students and teachers alike, are friendly and help each other whenever there are problems. There are many student activities on campus. Students also have the advantage of being in one of the UK's most inexpensive towns.
C. Teachers at this university have excellent industrial connections for the simple reason that most of them worked in their own fields for many years before they came to take up teaching posts at the university. Teamwork on projects enables students to learn from each other, and to learn to work successfully to achieve a common goal. However, the social scene is limited because the students there do not live on campus, and most of them travel to college by car or train from outside London.
D. Students at this university enjoy the city's busy nightlife. Everything is near at hand and the university bar is cheap and cheerful. The cost of living here, however, is high. A bike is the cheapest and quickest way of getting around the city. This year, there are around 500 international students from 30 countries all over the world.
E. The university has the smallest student population which is made up of the students from different countries throughout the world. The campus is beautiful but quite far away from any cities, so you have to use buses or taxis if you don't have a car. The university is known for being in one of the UK's cheapest towns for students.
F. The university is well-known for the quality(质量)of its teaching and research. It is most popular among students who want to study mathematics. The university has the second smallest student population in the country. The university is in the heart of a city so that everything is close at hand.

Everyone needs friends, so how to make true friends is very important to anybody. To make friends, you must be friendly to others. A smile is like a magnet that draws people. Smile at others and you are always sure to get a smile in return. You should do your best to make a stranger feel at home, no matter where he happens to be. Think as you are in his position.
Try to remember other's names, which will make them feel that they have made an impression on you. If you don't agree with others on certain matter, don't argue but discuss with them. You should think more of others than of yourselves.
Finally, don't believe those who leave their friends when they are in trouble because“A friend in need is a friend indeed.”
