There are three branches of medicine. One is called “doctor medicine,” or “scientific medicine.” Scientific doctors try to observe sicknesses, look for logical patterns, and then find out how the human body works. From there they figure out what treatments may work. This kind of medicine is believed to date from the 4th century BC. Although nowadays it is successful, in the ancient world this approach probably did not cure many patients.
A second kind of medicine is called “natural cures,” or “folk medicine,” in which less educated people try to cure sicknesses with various herbs(中草药). These folk healers also use observation and logic, but they are not so aware of it. They try things until they find something that seems to work, and then keep doing that. Folk medicine flourished long before the development of scientific medicine and was more successful in ancient times than doctor medicine.

The third kind is called “health spas,” or “faith healing.” Sometimes this may be as simple as touching the holy man and being immediately healed. Other times, a magician may make you a magic charm, or say a spell, to cure you. Some religious groups organize special healing shrines for the sick. In these places people rest, get plenty of sleep, eat healthy food, drink water instead of wine, and exercise in various ways. They also talk to the priests and pray to the gods. If you are feeling depressed or you have been working too hard, going to these places may be just the right thing to make you feel better.

MADRID——What is it that makes people happy? Youth, health, a good job, good looks, a flashy car? None of these things, Spanish experts say.
The concept of happiness is coming under increasingly close examination in Spain.

As the nation rises to the club of the world' s wealthiest countries, people are discovering that material things do not bring happiness.

“Most people use money as a measure. Of human value,” says Jesus Yunfante, author of a book on Spain's 300 biggest fortunes.

“Expensive products are regarded as the best. The rich are admired simply for being rich,” Yunfante said.

Yet psychologists warn that happiness cannot be bought. They advise people to look for it in human relations and in the small pleasures of everyday life.

Many people regard happiness as a moment of ecstatic pleasure(狂喜)—— something that, by definition, cannot last——while others speak of it as peace and acceptance of oneself. Polls(问卷调查) in different countries indicate that between 65 and 85 per cent of the world' s population regard themselves as reasonably happy.
Around 40 per cent, of a person's happiness is thought to be determined by genetics, while the rest depends on childhood environment and the process of growing up.

Perhaps the most surprising thing about happiness is that it has little to do with age, health, wealth, or other values thought to be important in Western society.

For most Spaniards, happiness is linked with feeling close to other people.

Happy people accept their limitations and set themselves reachable goals., experts say.

There are lifestyle choices which favour happiness, such as exercise, eating carbohydrates and exposing oneself to sunlight.

But the main secret of happiness is to take pleasure in small things.

“If you are given a choice between eternal (永久的)happiness, and a cheese sandwich, take the sandwich,” advises musician Julian Hernandez.

Perhaps it wasn't love at first sight, but it came mighty close, Keith and I were freshmen at the University of Georgia when we met. I was majoring in child development, planning to become a teacher. Keith's major was animal science; he hoped to raise cattle someday. The year was 1979, the future seemed to hold nothing but promise.

I was attracted by Keith's good looks, gentleness and perfect manners. But the most appealing thing about Keith was a love of life that seemed to shine through everything he did. He loved keeping fit. When we were married in 1984, the year after we finished college, we felt sure we would live happily ever after.
Both of us wanted to stay in southern Georgia. Three years went by. Then abdominal pains led Keith to consult a doctor. We were told he had cancer.

One of our doctors said that since the chemotherapy could render Keith sterile(不孕), we might consider storing some of Keith's semen in a sperm(精子)bank. We did this. As the months went by, we faced our situation as best we could. Both of us wanted the experience of parenthood very much. And when Keith was feeling better, we decided that despite the cancer and our uncertain future, we would try to bring new life into the world.

My doctor said that perhaps our best chance would be with-in vitro fertilization(试管授精).In this procedure the woman egg is fertilized by the man 5 sperm outside the body and then implanted in the uterus(子宫). There is only a 20-percent chance of achieving pregnancy(怀孕). To improve those odds, the reproductive endocrinologist, Dr. Edouard Servy, decided to implant five fertilized eggs. No one expected more than one or possibly two to survive. Four did! It was a difficult pregnancy, though; I had a tendency to go into labor much too soon. At 26 weeks I was admitted into University Hospital in August and kept on bed rest for more than two months. Even with labor-suppressant(分娩抑制)drugs, contractions started four times.
In November the cancer reached Keith's liver. His one desire now was that he would live to see his babies born. And he succeeded. On December 17,1992, our babies were delivered by cesarean section while Keith sat beside me in the operation room.

57. How do you understand the last sentence of the first paragraph?
A. The future can do nothing but promising.
B. Their future would promise them something.
C. They were confident in their future.
D. They would get nothing in the future because of Keith's cancer.
58. When did the doctor find that Keith had cancer?
A. In 1979.  B. In 1984 C. In 1987 D. In 1989
59. How did the author get pregnant?
A. Sexual intercourse.  B. With-in vitro fertilization.
C. Using other's sperm.  D. With Dr. Edouard Servy.
60. How many babies did she produce?
A. One.  B. Two.  C. Three.  D. Four
