此外，报道中的“pyramid selling”指的是“传销”。日常生活中，人们常用pyramid（金字塔）来形容一种“基础广阔、自下而上逐级狭窄的社会现象”，如：education pyramid（教育“金字塔”） 就是指“按既定标准，通过层层筛选、淘汰，选拔出符合既定标准的精英”。

但在“传销”中，人们却反其义，拿pyramid（金字塔）来形容“由上而下”而非“由下而上”的运作模式，即“用尖顶来比喻上线，基于上线，逐上而下次第发展许多下线”。
