这里的“preferential treatment”指的就是“优待、特殊待遇”。“Preferential”的意思是“优先的、特惠的”，后面加上“treatment”即为“优待”。常见的与“preferential”搭配构成的词还有“preferential duty”（特惠关税）、“preferential loan”（优惠贷款）、“preferential price”（优惠价）和“preferential right”（优先权）等。

此外，“给某人优待”可以用“give special treatment”来表示。
