At the center of Toni Morrison’s fifth novel, “Beloved” earned her the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

Toni Morrison is one of the most important authoresses in modern America. Western critics generally believed that Morrison had inherited the early Black literature tradition. She is not only familiar with the Black folklore, Greek Mythos, Bible of Christianity, but also benefits a lot from the edification of classical literature. The terseness in her inditing style is similar to Hemingway, while the mystery in plot is close to William Faulkner. But Morrison dare to explore as well as innovate, giving up the idiomatic language which used by the White People.

Concerning about this novel, Baby at last obtain her liberty, breathing the free air with her own nose and appreciate the world with eyes of her own which had never occurred in her life before. She fell in love with multifarious colors, blue at the beginning, continually yellow, and pink before her death. She is reluctant to appreciate the “pink” which she regarded as the color of tragedy that Sethe and Beloved had deducted.

It is an experience that we had never tasted and a story that will never repeat again.

A woman brutally kills her infant daughter rather than allow her to be enslaved. The woman is Sethe, and then the novel traces her journey from slavery to freedom during and immediately following the Civil War. Woven into this circular, mesmerizing narrative are the horrible truths of Sethe's past: the incredible cruelties she endured as a slave, and the hardships she suffered in her journey north to freedom. Just as Sethe finds the past too painful to remember, and the future just "a matter of keeping the past at bay," her story is almost too painful to read.

Killing is a fair and reasonable way for the black to get rid of the slavery in those hard times, for me, it was cruel. We can still remember the scars in Beloved’s neck when the day she came back. Beloved’s body was immersed in blood when Sethe used saw to segment her neck. I wonder why is had to be saw? Stifling to death at least would not be so bloody, which leastwise would gave her more time to send her beloved daughter to Paradise in a more tender way, though it is also the death.

Though, having girlish stature, Beloved’s mentality was still staying in the infantile age. Beloved’s coming was for revenge, for want of the love from Sethe.

This is a miserable but exceedingly excitable novel concerning about punishment, revenge, as well as love. Black people were compelled by slavery to escaping and pursuing the rebirth despite the threat of anguish and death.

“Beloved” lets us all see the enduring promise of hope that lies in anyone’s future.
