In American schools, computers have taken over many of the jobs that teachers used to do. Computers ask students questions. If the students give the right answer, the computer will say, “Fantastic!” Some computers even read stories aloud to students. Students can do scientific experiments on their computers and can do homework on floppy disks (软盘).
Both students and teachers are crazy about computers. “With computers, students get help immediately,” said one teacher. “But if the students don’t have computers, they must wait for me to walk around and get to them.
“I can type faster than I can write,” said a student.” Using a computer is easier than using an eraser.”
Computers are also very patient. A teacher may become angry with a student. But computers are always calm. When a student gives the wrong answer, the computer just says,” Please try again.”
Companies that make software for schools have a difficult job. They must make the software as interesting as the programs that students watch on TV. But they are succeeding, because students like computers as much as teachers do.

Lucky is the man who has no “ skeleton in his closet.” When a man has done something in his life that he is ashamed of and that he wants to hide, he is said to have a “ skeleton in his closet.” Some people may have more than one skeleton.
As we have noted many times, it is hard to find out how these expressions begin. Sometimes, we get some hard facts. But more often we have to depend on guesswork. And that is true of this phrase, which came from England.
Before 1832, English law did not permit a doctor to cut open a dead human body for scientific examination, unless it was the corpse (尸体) of an executed (处决) criminal.
But when it became legal, more and more doctors demanded skeletons for a more scientific study of medicine. It was helpful in the advance of modern medicine. The demand had become so strong that men began to rob tombs and sell skeletons to doctors at high prices.
We are told that a doctor would usually buy just one skeleton for scientific study. It became very important in his work. But he had to keep it hidden because most people objected to keeping such a thing. As a rule, the doctor would keep his skeleton in some dark corner where it could not be seen, or hide it in a closet.
After a time, people began to suspect every doctor of hiding a skeleton in the closet. From this suspicion, the phrase “ a skeleton in the closet” took on a broader, more general meaning. To describe anything that a man wanted to keep others from discovering. It could be proof of a criminal act, or something much less serious. Well, that is one theory.
One writer, however, believes that the phrase might have come from something that really happened. It is his guess that a hidden closet in some old English country home may have turned up a real skeleton, clear proof of some old family shame or crime. Well, one man’s guess is as good as another. But this sounds like a story by the great French novelist, Balzac.
Balzac tells us of a man who suspected his wife of having a lover. The husband comes home by surprise. But she hears him and quickly hides her lover in the closet of her bedroom. He enters her room and asks her if she is hiding her lover. He says he will not open the door to the closet if she promises him there is no one there; He will believe her. She answers firmly that she is not hiding anyone in the closet.
The husband then begins to build a solid brick wall against the closet. His wife watches, knowing that her lover will never come out alive. But she will not change her story and admit her guilt.
64. Which of the following situations is suitable for using the phrase “ Skeleton in the closet”?
A. You have stolen something precious and don’t want it discovered.
B. You are a doctor and have to keep a skeleton for research.
C. If you have cut open a dead human body for scientific examination you should keep
the skeleton a secret.
D. You have done a crime or done something foolish, but you want to keep others
from discovering it.
65. From the text we know there are _____ theories about how the phrase “ Skeleton in the
closet” came into being.
A. one B. two C. three D. four
66. Which of the following is right according to the text?
A.In the 19th century, doctors realized the importance of anatomy (解剖) in the development
of medicine.
B. The doctors of the ancient times liked to collect as many skeletons as possible.
C. The thieves stole skeletons from tombs in order to help the doctors.
D. It is legal that corpses of anybody are cut open for scientific examination in history.
67. From the story Balzac told us that the wife’s lover must have become _______.
A. a corpse B. a phrase
C. a skeleton D. a secret
D
All of us believe what we see. We say to ourselves, "I know, I was there; I saw it happen" and that seems to settle the matter. Or does it? Can we really trust the evidence of our eyes?
Take competitive sports for example. Fans who see the same game will not agree with each other and will disagree with the judge. "He was out of bounds when he caught the pass," says one fan. Says another, "You're crazy. I saw it with my own eyes. He was five feet in bounds. You must be blind." The judge ruled that the receiver did step out of bounds. But thousands of fans still disagreed--- because they were there!
It's the same story in the courtroom. Trial procedure depends on witnesses(证人)giving sworn testimony (证词). But just how reliable is the testimony of a person who reports what he has seen? In a recent study, ten thousand witnesses were asked to describe the thief they saw commit a crime. The study shows that, on the average, the witnesses overestimated the man's height by five inches, his age by eight years, and gave the wrong hair color in 83 percent of the cases. These witnesses didn't play tricks on them!
What can we do to keep error to the least First of all, don't let your emotions(情绪)interfere with your vision. Don't see something because you want to see it. Secondly, try to stay relaxed. If you are tense, you are likely to see red when the color is blue. And finally, it helps to make notes of what you see. Don't trust your memory alone. Take pictures, make recordings, and use any other aid to reduce distortion(弯曲).
68. The passage suggests that fan’s judgment at sports events _________.
A. are swayed(支配) by emotion B. don't trust the judge
C. lie about what they see D. have no respect for the truth
69. The word "them" in the last line of paragraph 3 refers to _________.
A. the eyes of the witnesses B. the sworn testimony given by the witnesses
C. the members of the jury D. the height, age and hair color of the thief
70. To keep visual error to the least, all of the following are necessary except _________.
A. to stay calm B. to get close for a better look
C. not to let your emotions interfere D. to make notes of what you see

Washington, April 4–The United States has more than 90 million families for the first time, but each contains fewer people on average than ever, the Census Bureau(统计局)reported today.
The 90,031,000 families in the United States averaged 2.64 members each as of last July 1.
“The reason is, in effect, changes in the age structure,” explained Campbell Gibson, a population researcher for the bureau. Most Americans born in the great explosion of births after World War II are now in their 20’s and 30’s when they are most likely to set up families, he said.
The fact that many are doing so increased the number of families from 80.4 million in 1980 to 88.8 million in 1986 and past the 90 million mark last summer.
At the same time, the average number of people per family dropped from 2.75 in 1985 to 2.65 in 1986 and then to 2.64, Mr. Gibson said.
By comparison, the 1970 Census found the average family contained 3.14 people. Families averaged more than four people in 1939 and more than five in 1880.
The growing number of ever – smaller families is still going on, but Mr. Gibson pointed out that family growth was not the same as population increase in the 1970’s.
The same age factors that are increasing the number of families also happened then, but in the 1970’s the proportion (比例) of families in each age group was also growing.
That hasn’t continued in the 1980’s for a number of possible reasons, Mr. Gibson said.
For example, in the 1980’s more young people have chosen to remain home with their parents instead of setting up housekeeping on their own, as many did in the 1970’s.
This could be caused by the increasing cost of housing, he said. Delays in marriage while young people go to work and school, have also been widely reported as a factor, but it was not the only factor for the family changes.
71.The smaller figure of families reported here is .
A.1980 B.80,400,000 C.2.64 D.90 million
72.How did Mr. Gibson explain the reason of the increase in families?
A.About 0.96 million new families have been set up since 1980.
B.All the big families were split into smaller ones.
C.There are a great number of young people who are newly married.
D.There was a great explosion of births during the Second World War.
73.What’s the reporter’s attitude towards the present situation?
A.People should get married at a later age.
B.The average number of family members should be 2.64.
C.It’s not clear in the report.
D.Young people should set up housekeeping on their own, as many did in the 1970’s
74.From the last paragraph we may infer that .
A.delay in marriage will not help to change the number of the families
B.delay in marriage is the major factor of the family changes
C.the writer felt sorry that many young people now delay their marriages
D.there must be some other factors which have led to the slower growth in the 1980’s
75.The underlined word “factor” in the passage means .
A.reason B.something that proves to be true
C.advantage D.something that helps to bring about a result

Boy: Good idea. We both like coffee please. OK, here is one of Ed, my roommate. I took this picture right after we arrived at school this fall. We just met, in fact, and this was our room in the dormitory while we were cleaning our things. What a mess!
Girl: You certainly had a lot of boxes. How did you ever find room for everything?
Boy: In the beginning we thought we never got it all arranged, but now we’re
comfortable. Luckily for me, Ed keeps his things neat.
Girl: Do you like living in the dormitory?
Boy: It’s not bad. Sometimes Ed turns his radio up too loud and makes too much noise, then I got angry. Sometimes I leave my books and clothes lying around and then he gets angry, but usually we get along. Here’s a picture taken when we went to visit my family during vacation.

Well, I rushed along the platform and got on just before it left and I breathed a sigh of relief, I can tell you , because I'd been sure I was going to miss it and the people who were meeting me at the other end would have had to wait. Anyway, I settled into my seat and I was just staring out of the window and watching the world go by when suddenly the thing ground to a halt. And then there was this announcement, that due to some problem or other with the electric, we were going to be stuck there for quite some time. So I ended up having to get off, change and go by a different route, which meant that I kept them waiting anyway.

Boy: Terrible, wasn't it? Well, what did you think of "Madame Curie"? Did you think it
was as good as the reviews said it was?
Girl: It was a good film, but not as good as the book. I think some of the story was missing
in the film.
Boy: Yes, but you couldn't possibly fit everything that happens in a 200-page novel into a
2-hour film. There simply isn't time.
Girl: No, I know, but the director should at least try to follow the story. (Annoyed). With
this film he left out some important people and even changed the end.
Boy: (Amused). Well, perhaps he thought he was improving the story, Karen.
Girls: Perhaps he did, but I just don't think a film director has the right.
